A Re-Imagined Workshop Format
The 12th IBDW introduces a co-creative, participant-driven format designed to maximize collaboration, accelerate research translation, and actively shape the field's priorities — together.
Lightning Talks for Every Accepted Abstract
Every accepted abstract will take the stage — one slide, 90 seconds. No parallel sessions. No one left in the hallway. Each presenter distills their core finding into a single, powerful snapshot that sparks conversation during the dedicated Lounge Poster sessions that follow. This keeps the full community in the room and on the same page.
The Risk Board
At the close of the workshop, participants collectively rank the field's most pressing open questions and research priorities using a live, real-time polling board — the Risk Board. This isn't a passive wrap-up: it's a structured, democratic process that turns the room's collective expertise into a tangible research roadmap.
Results are synthesized on-screen in real time, creating a community-owned agenda that participants carry back to their institutions and funding proposals. The Risk Board output will be shared with all attendees and inform the workshop's consensus statement.
Think Tank Breakouts
Structured small-group sessions let participants dive deep into a focused research challenge and return with concrete recommendations — not just conversation.
Live Innovation Lab
A dedicated track for rapid-prototype "tech sprints" where teams tackle a live data challenge and present findings before the workshop ends — real science, real time.
Collaboration Pods
Pre-formed small groups of 4–6 researchers with complementary expertise meet across structured intervals to seed new cross-institutional partnerships.
Community Co-Design Lab
Patient advocates and community partners co-lead a dedicated session, shaping research priorities from lived experience — moving co-design from aspiration to practice.
